After the shock draw in the Europa League against Dundalk, John van den Brom made three changes to his line-up with Illias Bel Hassani, Ben Rienstra and Wout Weghorst coming in for AZ. The changes proved to be pivotal for the visitors as Weghorst opened the scoring just before half-time, with the striker sliding the ball past Mickey van der Hart after it fell to his feet in the box.
Early in the second half Ron Vlaar hit the bar with a fierce strike while at the other end Danny Holla nearly drew PEC Zwolle level with a free-kick which was well saved by Sergio Rochet.
Van den Brom threw Guus Til on for his Eredivisie debut and on 87 minutes the midfielder sealed AZ’s victory with a lovely strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
AZ now move joint second with PSV Eindhoven, while PEC Zwolle are rock bottom with only two points from six games.
