AZ Alkmaar have started their Eredivisie campaign with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Fortuna Sittard.

With Guus Til in Russia to seal his move to Spartak Moscow, Teun Koopmeiners took the captains armband, while Thomas Ouwejan was selected in midfield.

AZ struggled to break down Fortuna Sittard in the first-half and the biggest highlight before half-time was a lovely tribute from both fans towards Fernando Ricksen in the 12th minute.

Eight minutes into the second half the breakthrough finally came for the hosts. A corner was headed into his own goal by Rasmus Karjalainen, although Ron Vlaar claimed the goal.

Two minutes later, Oussama Idrissi was played through on goal by Myron Boadu and the winger slotted in AZ’s second goal. Then just before the hour mark, Calvin Stengs set up Boadu to emphatically hammer in AZ’s third goal.

AZ continued to attack and eventually the fourth goal came in the 83rd minute when Stengs crossed for Yukinari Sugawara to fire in his first goal for the club.

A good start to the season for Arnie Slot, who must now prepare for Thursday’s Europa League clash with FK Mariupol.
