AZ went into the game full of confidence, while Manchester United were a team under pressure after a string of poor results. The Premier League side also decided to rest a number of key players after having concerns with the state of ADO Den Haag’s plastic pitch.
The home side had the best chances of the first half but David De Gea made a good save to deny Oussama Idrissi, while Dani de Wit headed over the bar. Myron Boadu did have the ball in the net but it was correctly chalked off for offside.
Again in the second half the better chances fell to AZ but Yukinari Sugawara fired over the bar, while Owen Wijndal tested De Gea with a fierce strike from distance.
Manchester United failed to trouble Marco Bizot once during the ninety minutes but they were denied a penalty before the end after what looked like a foul on Marcus Rashford.
In the end, AZ had to settle for a point and their second draw in the group stages so far. In the group’s other match, Partizan Belgrade defeated Astana.
