AZ Alkmaar have resigned right-back Ricardo van Rhijn on a one-year contract.

Following 15 appearances in a loan spell last season, AZ seeked to resign Club Brugge right-back van Rhijn, who was released from his contract with the Belgian side.

The 27-year-old made 163 appearances for Ajax at the start of his career, earning him eight caps for the Dutch national team. Since then, a move to Belgium didn’t work out well.

Van Rhijn will serve as back-up to Jonas Svensson plus offer depth at centre-back and defensive midfield.

I'm a physics student from the UK and a massive Eredivisie fan. Started watching after being inspired by the Netherlands national team after the 2010 World Cup. Wilfred Bouma also has a big part to play in my initial keen interest in the league, being a Villa fan meant I wanted to keep track of my favourite player.
