After the defeat to Ajax two weeks ago PSV’s reign at the top was ended, and many wondered if Phillip Cocu’s side would drop points once again when they visited an in-form AZ, who started with Vincent Janssen up front. However, after a edgy opening, PSV Eindhoven dominated the AFAS Stadion and came away with a comfortable win which puts them back on top of the table ahead of Ajax’s tie with PEC Zwolle on Sunday.
Gaston Pereiro was unlucky to hit the crossbar on 13 minutes with a lovely chip, but seconds later the Uruguayan did find the net as his shot from close range deflected off Derrick Luckassen and beat Sergio Rochet. From that moment on PSV controlled the game and Luciano Narsingh, and Luuk de Jong both had to be denied by Rochet as the visitors poured forward.
Finally before the break PSV found their second goal with Van Ginkel playing a lovely one-two with De Jong before sliding the ball into the net.
On the hour mark Narsingh made it 3-0 after great build up play by Davy Propper, before Marco van Ginkel squeezed a free kick into the net for the fourth on 64 minutes.
With ten minutes left Jop van der Linden pulled one back with a header from a free kick, and AZ threatened an unlikely comeback when Maumer Tankovic slotted in from close range to make it 4-2. However, PSV comfortably saw out the last five minutes to seal a much needed victory and put the pressure back on Ajax.
