Groningen’s horror start to the season continued on Sunday as AZ Alkmaar came away from the Euroborg with a 3-1 victory.

Groningen went into the game rock-bottom of the table, but the hosts took the lead in the 25th minute when  Julian Chabot shrugged off Guus Til to head in a corner.

However, AZ, who had an early goal by Bjorn Johnsen disallowed via VAR, struck back two minutes later with Oussama Idrissi netting from a Jonas Svensson cross.

Groningen was then dealt a big blow when Deyovaisio Zeevuik received a red card after a bad challenge on Idrissi was spotted by VAR. Moments later, though, Groningen were awarded a penalty for a foul by Til, but Ritsu Doan’s spot kick was saved by Marco Bizot.

With the extra man, AZ dominated after the break but had to wait until the 75th minute to take the lead through Fredrik Midtsjø, who found the net from the edge of the area.

Groningen’s chances of a comeback were ruined when Hrustic saw his second yellow card and before the end, AZ added a third as substitute Adam Maher smashed the ball past Sergio Padt for his first goal since returning to the club.

AZ is still fifth while Groningen are bottom with three points from six games.
