VVV Venlo made a good start to the game with Torino Hunte twice racing through on goal, but the winger failed to net on both occasions, while Ralf Seuntjens hammered a shot wide from a tight angle.
AZ, who had won their last five league games, slowly began to take control as the half wore on, but Wout Weghorst saw a goal chalked off for a foul by Alireza Jahanbakhsh. Just before the break, Thomas Ouwejan had a header excellently saved by Delano van Crooij.
The second half was a drab affair until the opening goal came with fifteen minutes to go. Ralf Seuntjens headed into his own net to give AZ the lead.
Substitute Johnatan Opoku missed a great chance to equalise for the hosts and moments later Pantelis Hatzidiakos hammered a strike into the net from the edge of the area to seal AZ’s victory.
The win means AZ are now two points ahead of Ajax, while VVV sit 13th.
