The 18-year-old was widely unknown outside of Alkmaar before a couple of weeks ago, but such has been his impact in the European play-offs that he is now regarded as a future superstar. Stengs scored twice over the two legs against Groningen and then provided two assists in the victory over AZ on Thursday.

AZ have now tied Stengs down to the club with a new five-year deal which will keep him tied the AFAS Stadion until 2022.

“I have a good season and this is the reward for it,” Stengs told the clubs official website.

Stengs will now look to confirm AZ’s place in the Europa League when the second leg of the play-off with Utrecht takes place on Sunday.
