AZ Alkmaar have lost three games on the bounce after they fell to a 2-1 loss at Excelsior on Sunday.

After defeats to Apollon Limassol and Feyenoord, AZ Alkmaar were looking to bounce back with a win over Excelsior.

However, AZ found themselves 2-0 down after only half an hour. Firstly, Siebe Horemans netted from a free-kick before Marouan Azarkan slotted the ball past Hobie Verhulst.

The second goal triggered Pascal Jansen to make a double change as Yuki Sugawara and Yusuf Barasi appeared for Myron van Broderode and Maxim Dekker. Early in the second half, Sugawara made it 2-1 after good work from Tijjani Reijnders.

AZ then went looking for the equaliser but Dani de Wit hit the post, before Reijnders, Jens Odgaard, and substitute Riechedly Bazoer tested goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel. Mayckel Lahdo got a huge chance in extra time but van Gassel denied the winger as Excelsior held on.

Excelsior climbs to ninth with the win, while AZ is 4th.
