Feyenoord’s title defence got off to a winning start with Steven Berghuis heading the champions to a 2-1 victory over Twente.

Justin Bijlow was handed his first start for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie with both Kenneth Vermeer and Brad Jones injured, and the young goalkeeper had to be alert early on to deny Fredrik Jensen.

Twente looked the brighter side in the opening stages but Feyenoord eventually took the lead with Jean-Paul Boetius crossing for Nicolai Jorgensen to tap-in his first of the campaign. However, Twente remained dangerous and eight minutes before the break Jensen curled a fantastic effort into the top corner from the edge of the box to make it 1-1.

Feyenoord began the second half brightly and after two missed chances, Steven Berghuis headed in a free kick to restore their lead on the hour mark. That proved to be the winning goal with Feyenoord comfortably seeing out the last half hour of the match to ensure a winning start.
