A Steven Berghuis double saw Feyenoord defeating Heracles Almelo 2-1 despite having Nicolai Jorgensen sent off.

AZ Alkmaar’s shock defeat at home to ADO Den Haag earlier on Saturday meant Feyenoord would consolidate third spot with a win over Heracles.

All was going well for the hosts when Steven Berghuis slotted in the opener in the 33rd minute after a sweeping move.

However, Jesper Drost equalised for the visitors just two minutes into the second half after good work by Kristoffer Peterson. The game then turned in Heracles favour when Nicolai Jorgensen was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Tim Breukers.

Despite being down to ten men, Feyenoord dominated and with nine minutes left they were awarded a penalty for a pull on Eric Botteghin. Berghuis dispatched the spot-kick to make it 2-1.

Heracles pushed for an equaliser but Feyenoord held on for a victory which moves them four points ahead of AZ Alkmaar. Heracles remains 6th.
