Steven Bergwijn’s excellent double earned PSV Eindhoven a 2-1 victory at Sparta Rotterdam.

Sparta Rotterdam, looking for a win to take them off the bottom, stunned the leaders by taking the lead in the sixth minute. Jeroen Zoet failed to deal with a corner which led to Paco van Moorsel’s cross being headed in by Kenneth Dougall.

PSV pushed forward looking for an equaliser but Luuk de Jong headed straight at Jannick Huth, while Bergwijn saw an effort cleared from the line. Just before the break, PSV did level through Bergwijn who curled a strike into the top corner from just outside the box.

Ten minutes into the second half Bergwijn scored another excellent goal. A long ball was headed down by De Jong and Bergwijn hammered a volley into the net to give PSV the lead.

Sparta came close to finding an equaliser but Zoet kept out an attempt by Soufyan Ahannach, while Sander Fischer headed just wide. In injury time, Bergwijn nearly completed his hat-trick but the wingers strike came off the bar.

The win moves PSV ten points clear at the top while Sparta remain rock bottom.
