PSV Eindhoven have defeated Haugesund 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie.

After their Champions League exit last week and draw at Twente in the league at the weekend, PSV went to Norway looking for a confidence boosting performance and victory.

The hosts dominated the opening stages and Kristoffer Velde missed a golden opportunity to give Haugesund the lead. However, as the first half wore on PSV took control and in the 24th minute, they were awarded a penalty for a handball. Steven Bergwijn slotted in the spot-kick to make it 1-0.

Just before the break, Haugesund should have equalised but Velde again failed to beat Zoet from an excellent position.

Early in the second half, Bruma played Donyell Malen through on the left but from a tight angle the winger fired just wide. Mark van Bommel then brought on Cody Gakpo and Hirving Lozano, but PSV could not find a killer second goal.

PSV hung on for the victory and take a crucial away goal back to Eindhoven. At the weekend, ADO Den Haag visit PSV in the Eredivisie.
