Australia was level for most of their first game in Russia but a late Paul Pogba deflected strike gave France the victory.
Van Marwijk told NOS, ”On the one hand I am satisfied about the way we played but on the other hand I am disappointed with the result . We deserved at least a point. We lost due to a dubious penalty and an unlucky goal.
”From the bench, I thought it was not a penalty I have to see it again. I can’t change anything.
”At one point in the match France did not know how to play against us and that tells it’s own story. We have showed that we were not scared today and that people might have also thought that we could have even won the match today.
”We must carry the way we played today into our next match. Everybody was intrigued by how we would get on against one of the favourites to win the World Cup. We made life difficult for them and at times we were also the better team. We must take confidence from that.”
