Bert Van Marwijk spoke to the NOS after Australia suffered 2-0 defeat to Peru in their last group match of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

After the loss to France and draw with Denmark, Australia went into their final game with Peru needing a win to progress. However, Peru won 2-0 to send the Socceroos home.

Van Marwijk said, ”I believe that we leave the World Cup in Russia with our heads held high. Once again we gave everything today.

”If you look at the way we have played and the chances we created it appears that we have difficulty in scoring goals at this level.

”Today we had 14 shots on goal and Peru only 3 and of those 3 shots they scored 2 goals.

”We have shown in our 3 matches at this World Cup that we can play in a really stable way and I thought that today we were better than our opponent ”
