Blind had served as Hiddink’s assistant but will now take the reins himself from 1st August.
He has signed a three year deal, until August 2018, which would theoretically leave him in charge for the World Cup in Russia.

However his first priority remains qualification for the next years European Championships. “That’s my only goal, to get to the European Championship”.

It has proven to be a difficult qualification campaign so far, with the Netherlands sitting third after six matches but failure to qualify remains unimaginable, particularly given the expansion to the qualifying.

His first game in charge will be on 3rd September at the Amsterdam Arena against group leaders Iceland, before a trip to Turkey three days later. Having picked up only one point from these reserve fixtures, the Dutch can ill afford any more slip ups.
