Jean Paul Boetius scored as Mainz defeated Werder Bremen to seal their place in the Bundesliga next season. However, the situation for Davy Klaassen and his teammates looks very bleak.

Both sides went into the clash still in contention for relegation, but the situation is bleak for Werder Bremen, who started with Davy Klaassen. Jean-Paul Boetius and Jerry St Juste lined up for Mainz, who were confident after their victory against Dortmund last time out.

Robin Quaison put Mainz ahead after 25 minutes before Boetius made it 2-0 with a placed shot on the half-hour mark.

Klaassen set up Yuya Osako to pull one back for Bremen in the second half, but there was to be no comeback as Edimilson Fernandes sealed the hosts victory with five minutes left.

Mainz are now officially safe, while Werder Bremen remain second bottom and two points behind Fortuna Dusseldorf, who could only draw 1-1 with Augsburg.

Next week, Werder Bremen will be relegated if they fail to beat Cologne, while they are also relying on Union Berlin to defeat Fortuna Dusseldorf.
