Borussia Dortmund’s chances of winning the title were ended on Tuesday as Bayern Munich defeated Werder Bremen to seal their 8th straight title. Dortmund had to pick themselves up as Mainz, with Jean-Paul Boetius and Jerry St Juste in their starting eleven, turned up looking to claw themselves away from the bottom three.
The visitors looked more fired up than their opponents and that resulted in the lead after 33 minutes. Jonathan Burkardt headed in a cross.
Four minutes into the second half, Danny Latza was fouled in the box and Mainz were awarded a spot-kick, which Jean-Philippe Mateta scored to make it 2-0.
Dortmund could not recover and St Juste helped the defence keep a clean sheet to seal the victory. Boetius also played the full ninety minutes. Mainz are now five points clear of third bottom with two games to go.
