Eredivisie champions Feyenoord have made it two wins from two games after a 1-0 victory over local rivals Excelsior.

The Rotterdam derby began slowly with Feyenoord dominating possession without troubling the Excelsior defence. Then on 19 minutes, Tonny Vilhena danced through two challenges before playing Jean-Paul Boetius through on the left. The winger slid the ball into the bottom corner from a tight angle to net his first since returning to Feyenoord this summer.

It should have been 2-0 moments later, but after the ball dropped to the feet of Nicolai Jorgensen in the six-yard box the striker scuffed his shot wide. Excelsior grew into the game as the half progressed but the closest they came was a Zakaria El Azzouzi cross which just evaded a sliding Stanley Elbers.

The start of the second half saw Bjorn Kuipers wave away two strong penalty appeals from Feyenoord, while at the other Wout Faes could only head a good chance straight at Brad Jones. The returning goalkeeper then denied Milan Massop and Jurgen Mattheij as Excelsior threatened an equaliser, which never came.

Feyenoord held on for the three points which keeps them level on points at the top of the table, while Excelsior suffer their first defeat of the campaign.
