Utrecht have been one of the form clubs in the Eredivisie recently and last weeks 4-1 win at Groningen established Rene Hake’s side as genuine contenders for a European place.
The home side made a better start to the game on Sunday with Sebastien Haller denied by Mickey van der Haart, who then saved from a Yassin Ayoub bicycle kick.
PEC Zwolle mainly played on the counter attack and as the game went on they earned themselves chances to take the lead, but Lars Veldwijk and Stef Nijland couldn’t beat Robbin Ruiter.
The game seemed to be heading for a stalemate but in the 87th minute Ayoub’s free kick was met by substitute Ruud Boymans who headed past Van der Haart. Nacer Barazite could have increased the lead late on, but his shot from an angle flew inches wide.
Utrecht now leapfrog up to fifth, while PEC Zwolle sit eighth.
