The 43-year-old has been heavily linked with the position for several weeks, but has today been confirmed as Brentford’s new head coach, while former NEC assistant Ron Hendriksen will join him in England.
Dijkhuizen became Excelsior coach in January 2014, and not only guided the club to promotion, but also kept the Rotterdam side in the Eredivisie this season, finishing 15th and reached the KNVB Cup semi-finals.
A statement from Dijkhuizen on the Brentford website read, “I am proud to be the new Head Coach of Brentford FC.
“I have been to Brentford FC once before, with my father and brother, to see a game against Coventry City in March 2014
“We stood on the terrace behind the goal and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of football.
“There was some very good play. We also loved the ambiance in and around the stadium. That is football at its best.
“I am looking forward to working with everyone at the Club for a bright future.”
Brentford finished fifth in the Championship last season, but missed out on promotion through the play-offs.
