Erik ten Hag decided to give Dusan Tadic a rest for the clash against Fortuna Sittard, while Nicolas Tagliafico was missing.
Ajax were given a big shock in the sixth minute when Zian Flemming set up George Cox to fire Fortuna Sittard ahead. In the 24th minute it could have been 2-0 but Sebastian Polter failed to test Andre Onana with a weak effort.
In the 32nd minute, Ajax were awarded a penalty for a foul on Lassina Traore. Davy Klaassen stepped up but missed his spot-kick before netting on the rebound.
Klaassen then netted his second from close range just before the break after Traore had hit the crossbar.
In the 66th minute, Brian Brobbey made his debut for Ajax and the 18-year-old took only seven minutes to score his first goal. David Neres hit the post with a strike and Brobbey was there to score.
Ajax were then awarded two further penalties before the end, which Dusan Tadic and then Quincy Promes scored to make it 5-1. Cox then netted the best goal of the night at the other end with a stunning strike that flew into the top corner.
