After the defeat to HNK Rijeka in the Europa League during midweek, Feyenoord coach Fred Rutten had to make changes to his starting eleven, and one of the additions to the starting eleven Tonny Vilhena came close to scoring in the opening two minutes. The midfielder was played through on goal by Jens Toornstra but took too long and eventually Leonard Nienhuis smothered his shot.
Cambuur’s best chance of the first half fell to Martijn Barto on 21 minutes, but the forward’s shot was well saved by Kenneth Vermeer from close range.
Feyenoord opened the scoring on 37 minutes with Jordy Clasie brilliantly sending Toornstra through on goal, and although the midfielder’s initial effort was saved he was on hand to knock in the rebound.
Cambuur piled the pressure on Feyenoord in the second half as they looked for an equaliser, but Barto and Furdjel Narsingh were both guilty of missing good chances, while Sven van Beek put in a commanding defensive performance to take the three points to Rotterdam.
Feyenoord now sit third, moving above PEC Zwolle, while Cambuur slip to 6th.
