The home side made a breathtaking start to the game and found themselves 2-0 ahead in the opening fifteen minutes. Martijn Barto opened the scoring on nine minutes before taking advantage of poor defending from Etienne Reijnen to add his second four minutes later.
Cambuur couldn’t hold onto the lead though as on 52 minutes Johan Kappelhof rose in the box to head Groningen back into the game, and six minutes later Jasper Drost arrowed an excellent strike into the top corner to draw the tie level. Just before the equaliser Barto thought he had netted his hat-trick when he chested the ball in from close range, but after a consultation with the linesman Serdar Gözübüyük ruled it out for offside.
Neither side could find the winner before the end although Groningen goalkeeper Sergio Padt came the closest as his distant kick just fell off target with Leonard Nienhuis stranded.
The point sees Groningen stay 8th, while Cambuur are still second bottom, but level on points with Willem II.
