The game was end to end from the start with the woodwork struck by both sides before Vitesse Arnhem took the lead on 21 minutes when a corner was flicked into the path of Kelvin Leerdam at the back post, and the right back slid the ball into the net.
Cambuur leveled only four minutes later as striker Martijn Barto rose to head a free kick past Piet Velthuizen before Leerdam headed into his own net to make it 2-1 for the home side on 29 minutes.
The goals kept coming with Christian Atsu finishing off an excellent through ball from Davy Propper to make it 2-2 at the break. Ten minutes into the second half Bertrand Traore put Vitesse 3-2 up with a thunderous strike from just inside the box.
Once again Vitesse couldn’t hold onto the lead and Bartholomew Ogbeche rounded Velthuizen before slotting into an empty net to make it 3-3. Five minutes later Jody Lukoki’s cut back was fired into the corner by Barto, for his second and Cambuur’s fourth.
Vitesse had chances to equalise, but Cambuur held on for an excellent win which seems them all but guarantee their safety this season. With only two games too go, Vitesse are six points behind 2nd place Feyenoord, and with a poorer goal difference, it is almost impossible for the Arnhem side to reach the Champions League.
