Cambuurd boss Henk de Jong is furious that their side has been denied promotion to the Eredivisie after the cancellation of the Dutch football season.

On Friday, the KNVB held a meeting with Dutch clubs were 16 voted in favour of relegation going ahead, while nine were against. Nine clubs decided not to vote. This prompted the KNVB to make their own minds up and they decided against relegation.

That means RKC Waalwijk and ADO Den Haag stay in the Eredivisie, while Keuken Kampioen Divisie top two Cambuur and De Graafschap are denied promotion.

Cambuur boss Henk de Jong is absolutely furious at the decision and is quoted by NOS saying, “This is the greatest shame in the history of Dutch sport.

“We are leaders from mid-October. The mood of the clubs was in our favour. I think ADO Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk should stay in the Eredivisie. But then be joined by us. This is a huge blow for us in terms of sports and finances.”

Legal action is now expected, “I speak now from my own emotion. But I wouldn’t leave it at this. This is simply not possible. I would leave this to the best lawyers out there. ”

Cambuur general director Ard de Graaf confirmed legal action is being considered, “I am not a lawyer. But if there is only 1 percent chance, then we go for it. For us, promotion to the Eredivisie is equivalent to playing football in the Champions League for Ajax. ”
