AZ Alkmaar have it all to do after losing 2-0 to Celtic in the first leg of their Europa League tie.

After the 1-0 loss to RKC Waalwijk at the weekend, AZ boss Pascal Jansen returned Teun Koopmeiners and Fredrik Midtjso to the starting eleven, while Vangelis Pavlidis replaced the suspended Jesper Karlsson.

Koopmeiners set Pavlidis in on goal in the sixth minute, but the Greek striker saw his strike end off the post via Joe Hart. Six minutes later, Kyogo Furuhashi opened the scoring for Celtic, with the forward working in a cross from David Turnbull.

AZ did not come close to an equaliser before the break with Zakaria Aboukhlal’s efforts not troubling Hart in the Celtic goal. At the other end, Hobie Verhulst kept Celtic from netting a second.

Thijs Oosting shot over the bar from close range in the second half before Aboukhlal fired into the side netting. In the 61st minute, Celtic doubled their lead with James Forrest finding the net via Timo Letschert.

Hakon Evjen, Jordy Clasie and Ernest Poku all came off the bench but they could not find a goal for AZ, who were lucky not to end the game 3-0 down. Verhulst and Bruno Martins Indi both had to clear the ball off the line.

Next week, AZ must turn the tie around in Alkmaar or they will be out of the Europa League.
