Alfred Schreuder decided to bring Mohammed Kudus into the starting eleven for the visit of Rangers, with Brian Brobbey beginning on the bench.
Ajax began on top and in the 17th minute they had the lead with Edson Alvarez heading in a corner. A second goal quickly followed as Steven Berghuis found the net with a deflected strike.
Kudus then wrapped up an excellent first half for the hosts as he stormed into the box before hammering the ball into the corner to make it 3-0 after only 33 minutes. There could have been even more goals before the break, but Kenneth Taylor and Dusan Tadic were denied by the Rangers goalkeeper.
Ajax remained on top after the break, but Rangers did have a goal, scored by Borna Barisic, disallowed for offside in the build-up. Ten minutes before the end, Steven Bergwijn made it 4-0 as he took advantage of a stumble in the Ranger’s defence.
Ajax kept a clean sheet due to Jurrien Timber heading an effort against his own post and to safety.
An excellent start to the campaign for Ajax, who now face ties against Liverpool and Napoli.
Big win for Ajax. Congrats to gaffer Alfred Schreuder and his boys.
