After a defeat to Barcelona in the last round of matches, Ajax traveled to Paris knowing they were already out of the Champions league, but they were eager to prove a point against the money rich PSG.
Ajax started brightly but they were dealt a blow on nine minutes when Nicolai Boilesen was forced off after a hard challenge from ex-Ajax man Gregory van der Wiel. Early indications are that Boilesen has damaged ligaments in his knee and faces a while out injured.
The first real chance of the game fell to PSG on 24 minutes when Lavezzi was played through on goal, but Jasper Cillessen was quickly of his line to deny the forward. Ten minutes later PSG did take the lead as Zlatan Ibrahimovich sent Lavezzi through on goal again, but the forward was unselfish and squared for Edison Cavani to slot into an empty net.
Ajax responded well and they could have been level before the break when Ricardo van Rhijn was set up on the edge of the box, but the right back scuffed a shot wide.
In the second half Ajax looked determined to find an equaliser with Ricardo Kishna at the centre of all their good play, and on 67 minutes the winger sent an excellent cross into the box for Davy Klaassen, who’s diving header flew into the bottom corner. It was a deserved equaliser and the Parc de Princes seemed shocked.
However the equaliser woke PSG up and ex-Ajax forward Zlatan Ibrahimovich controlled in the box before firing an excellent first time shot past Cillessen and into the net on 78 minutes. Four minutes later it was 3-1, substitute Niki Zimling misjudged his back-pass, and sent Cavani through on goal, with the striker rounding Cillessen and firing in his second of the game.
Once again in the Champions League Ajax had looked good in possession, but made errors at the back which cost them dearly in the end. Frank de Boers men are still third and will book their place in the Europa League if they avoid defeat to APOEL in two weeks
