Earlier this month the Dutchman was named as the replacement for Frank Lampard at the Championship club. The departure to Chelsea was a disappointment for the fans of Derby, who just missed out on promotion last season.
Speaking to the press, Cocu said he understands the fans disappointment, “Because he did well at this club but for him it’s a great opportunity to become a coach at Chelsea. I’m not going to try to be like Frank. I will just be myself and I am sure that a good relationship can develop between the fans and the manager. ”
Cocu doesn’t expect many changes as he aims for promotion, “I have seen many matches from last season and Frank’s way of playing does not differ much from mine I don’t have to change very much, just some details. I am confident that we can once again finish in the top six of the Championship. Reaching the final of the play-offs has of course also been a great experience for the players. Especially with a young selection you need this kind of experience. ”
After success with PSV Eindhoven, Cocu was sacked just a few months into his spell with Fenerbahce last season. The former midfielder is looking forward to his new adventure abroad, “Of course I am very happy to be here. I think this club suits me well and that this is the right step in my career.”
Wishing Phillip Cocu, Derby footballers and fans exciting times ahead.
