Fenerbahce eased the pressure on coach Phillip Cocu with a 2-0 victory over Spartak Trnava in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Turkish press was predicting Cocu’s sacking after their 3-0 defeat to Rizespor on Monday but the former PSV boss is still in charge of Fenerbahce and oversaw their 2-0 victory over Spartak Trnava.

After the game, Cocu told Fox Sports, “It’s a very important moment to win. We lost the first game without a chance in Zagreb, then you have to win. This is different from the league, here too you have ambitions. I’m happy. We chose a slightly different way of playing and that’s what the players have followed up well.

Cocu is hoping the win can bring confidence back to his side, “The belief in each other increases when you win. The boys work hard. There are many nationalities and many new players, that is always difficult. But if you win more often, things will be easier. Now the pressure is increasing, more tension is creeping into the team. “

On Sunday, Fenerbahce host Istanbul Basaksehir, “We also have to achieve a good result on Sunday. Only then does this victory have any value. We are still irregular. I am very pleased with this match. This is a step. Sunday is another very different opponent.”
