Next Friday, Van Gaal will pick his 26-man Netherlands squad for the World Cup in Qatar. Matthijs de Ligt and Memphis Depay are both expected to be part of it, but both are still recovering from injury.
Memphis has a thigh problem and hasn’t featured for Barcelona since September. Xavi Hernandez had hoped to have the forward back, but he is still missing from the squad against Almeria this weekend. Barcelona now only have one game left before the World Cup.
De Ligt has been out for two weeks with a knee issue and he will not play for Bayern Munich this weekend against Hertha Berlin.
Losing Memphis would be a major blow for the NT. I know the squad has several other good forwards but none of them have been as consistent performers as Memphis been in an Oranje shirt.
I’m not concerned about De Ligt very much. The team has plenty of other great defenders to make a back three work fine (Ake, Botman, De Vrij, Timber, VVD). In fact, if De Ligt stays out we won’t have to worry about the royal screw-up he tends to have every 2-3 matches for the Dutch.
