Both Ronald de Boer and Gertjan Verbeek are puzzled as to why Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman did not call-up PSV attacker Steven Bergwijn for the matches with Peru and Frace.

The 21-year-old was included in the provisional squad after a fine start to the season but on Friday Bergwijn was missing from the full squad and instead will represent Jong Oranje.

Against Willem II on Saturday, the winger scored twice in a 6-1 demolition of Willem II and Gertjan Verbeek was asked if he understood why Koeman didn’t select him, “No, I do not quite understand that, and if you look at the matches he has played, he has made a very good impression. Then I do not understand why he is not there.”

Ronald de Boer was also confused, “Normally he plays with two strikers, I think Bergwijn understands that more than Justin Kluivert, he is also in shape, as we have seen in the Champions League, he will have a reason, but I do not quite understand it.”

Verbeek added, “Koeman is also not very clear in the criteria, as Van Gaal once was. He was clear about Sneijder and his associates: you have to be fit, play and be in shape, and Bergwijn meets that.”
