Netherlands boss Frank de Boer is hopeful that Virgil van Dijk will be available to play at the European Championships next summer.

The Liverpool star had to have knee surgery and is out of action for months. However, there is still a hope that Van Dijk can return before the end of the season.

Speaking to Studio Voetbal of the NOS, De Boer was asked about Van Dijk, “I did have contact with him.

“He had a good operation, he couldn’t really do anything during the first weeks. Hopefully, he will be ready for the European Championship. If he gets to play again at the beginning of May, that would be great. For him and for Oranje.”

Asked about the criticism he received after his first two games against Mexico and Bosnia, De Boer said,  “It was also somewhat created by the media, of course, I had to defend myself. I did that in my own way. You have to prove it on the field but of course it would have been nice if your first two games got six points.”
