Netherlands head coach Frank de Boer has explained why he decided to choose Luuk de Jong over Wout Weghorst.

The decision to choose De Jong over an in-form Weghorst left a lot of people baffled with the Wolfsburg star one of Europe’s most prolific strikers this season. Weghorst has scored 17 times in the Bundesliga this season.
De Boer told his press conference on Tuesday, “At the moment I have chosen between Luuk and Wout. At the moment I choose Luuk. I understand very well that it is a very delicate issue, it is also a very difficult issue. Certainly for Wout, but also certainly for me. Because Wout has done just fantastic, but Luuk has also done very well with the Dutch national team. We are in a very short period, then you consider things and I choose Luuk at that moment.
“I also called Wout and that was terribly difficult. He was certainly not happy, let that be clear. That is also normal. but at least he went the same way to make it as difficult as possible for me. He knocks terribly hard on the door, let that be clear. There are already a few holes in it. It was by far my most difficult decision, but at the moment I choose other players. Some are a bit more multifunctional, for example.”
The door is still open for Weghorst to make the Euro’s squad, “In my opinion, Luuk and Wout are a bit the same type. Then you can also say: you choose both. But at the moment I have chosen Luuk.
“Wout is doing a fantastic job, I appreciate him very much. We will continue to follow him. Others also know that they really have to do their best to play in the selection for the European Championship. He is certainly still in the sights for the European Championship, let that be clear.”

I didn’t understand anything. When you prefer a striker who doesn’t score over a top form striker with 17 goals you are completely wrong.
Give Wout a chance. You didn’t test him to have this opinion. Whithout Weghorst Holland can’t beat Turkey.

Very bad coach. In recent years, knvb has caused irreparable damage to the national team by selecting bad coaches. With this coach, the next World Cup may even be missed.
Rather than ‘doubling down’ on a bad decision he should have simply admitted he blew it and changed his decision for the good of the player and the team.
