Frank de Boer does not see Netherlands among the favourites to win the European Championships.

Netherlands begin their Euro campaign on the 13th of June against Ukraine, which will be Oranje’s first game at a major tournament since 2014.

Speaking with Algemeen Dagblad, De Boer was asked if Netherlands can win the tournament, and he responded, “We are going for the very highest, but then everything has to go well. Belgium, France, Spain, those are the top favourites. And look at Portugal, they can create a fantastic team. Germany and England too. I think we are going to come somewhere between fourth and eighth. ”

Asked if Netherlands will play 4-3-3 during the tournament, De Boer said, “I want to be able to switch quickly from one system to another. From a 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 … It is often only a difference of one or two figures that are slightly different, but we still need a while to grind it in. Then it can differ per match. And maybe it should. If you are not the top favourite, you have to see how you can maximum results. “

De Boer thinks his squad have a great atmosphere, “This Dutch national team is a team of friends. Boys who work for each other and are good for each other. I think it’s nice to see. That was also the case at the European Championship 2000. Just like at the 1998 World Cup, where we also reached the semi-finals.”

The Oranje boss thinks a great atmosphere is crucial, and looked back at Euro 96, “Look at the Orange squad at the 1990 World Cup. That was not a team of friends and I think it didn’t end well. And neither did the 1996 European Championship. I am firmly convinced that you should create a fantastic atmosphere during a tournament. And of course the result helps.”

Asked if atmosphere is why Wout Weghorst has not been called up before, De Boer added, “No, it was about positions and double occupation. I’ve always looked at that. I chose Luuk de Jong as the striker behind Memphis.

“Wout knows his place and knows what is expected of him, he has been proving that for years. And he can be an asshole in matches, especially for the opponent. But I really haven’t thought about what kind of atmosphere he could bring about or whatever.”
