The Eredivisie champions missed a number of chances at Parkhead, while Celtic netted a penalty, and a deflected shot which all but ended Ajax’s Champions League hopes.
Afterwards, Ajax coach Frank de Boer praised his side’s performance, stating that in football the best team does not always come away with a win.
De Boer said, “In football more than other profession’s, the best team does not always win. We had real chances, but they did not. It’s stupid that we just give away a penalty. It was the unfortunate and youthfulness of Denswil.”
“I’m proud of these guys. We had four or five open opportunities and therefore had to score the equalizer. Then its difficult that they make it 2-0. We dominated here, but we are now empty-handed and that is quite hard to take. ”
In two weeks, Ajax host Celtic in Amsterdam in a crucial tie for third place. De Boer added “I am convinced that in two weeks we just have to win”
