Frank de Boer believes it is logical that he follows the same path as Ronald Koeman with the Dutch national team for the time being.

For the first time since De Boer was appointed Koeman’s successor, the Netherlands squad gathered in Zeist ahead of their friendly against Mexico on Wednesday and Nations League games against Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Italy.

Speaking to the press on Monday, De Boer said he will not be experimenting too much with the squad, “It is logical that you do not start experimenting immediately if you are national coach for such a short time. I will first take a look at what will happen in the coming days. And that is why the KNVB has also chosen me: because they want to continue on the same line as under Koeman.”

The squad remains mainly the same as under Koeman, and asked how he decided to choose the players, De Boer said, “I obtained information from the staff members, from the directors and also from Virgil (van Dijk). So to immediately take a completely different approach … Everyone who is there now has earned their place. We will gradually evaluate and see what we need from the Dutch national team. Not only in the short term, but of course also in the long term. At Oranje you naturally work towards June: the European Championship. That is why we are going to observe carefully and next time I think something else is needed, I will choose someone else.”

Asked specifically about why Kevin Strootman remains in the squad, De Boer said, “Kevin has always been there and there is a reason for that. He is very important to everything that happens on and off the field. This moment each individual has earned their place. For now I see no reason whatsoever to select other players, but of course young players will knock on the door throughout the season. We will follow them carefully.”

De Boer added that he wants to see more consistency from the likes of Cody Gakpo or Justin Bijlow before they will receive a call-up.
