De Graafschap have secured their second win of the season after beating nine-man Willem II 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Willem II went into the game as favourites but after only 18 minutes Atakan Akkaynak was shown a red card for a stamp on Bart Straalman’s leg.

Moments after the red card, De Graafschap won a free-kick just outside the box and Stef Nijland curled the ball into the top corner to give the hosts the lead. It should have been 2-0 before the break when Diego Palacios blocked off Erik Bakker in the box. However, Bakker’s penalty came back off the post. Nijland also hit the woodwork.

Four minutes into the second half, Dries Saddiki headed in a corner to draw Willem II level. Four minutes later, the woodwork again prevented De Graafschap scoring, this time Jordy Thomassen.

Willem II had the game under control but Palacios was shown his second yellow card to reduce them to nine-men and eventually, De Graafschap made their advantage count. Daryl van Mieghem’s strike deflected in off of Fernando Lewis to give De Graafschap the win.

De Graafschap climb to 13th while Willem II are ninth.
