The Ajax midfielder came on at halftime with Netherlands trailing 1-0 and he made a big impact, setting up Memphis Depay to net the equaliser before Oranje eventually won 2-1.
After the game, De Jong spoke to Fox Sports, “I am very happy with my first minutes. It was fun and an honour for me to play with Sneijder for another fifteen minutes. We also won, so overall it was fine.”
On the nerves, De Jong said, “I was well taken care of and of course, I already knew some guys. We also played in the Arena, where I play every other week. That makes it all a bit easier.”
Netherlands face France in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday and De Jong is hoping to make his first start, “Of course, I hope that I play, but that is not for me to call. In the locker room, I said afterwards that I was glad that I was allowed to make my debut and that I felt honoured. For me, this was a very nice evening. “
