The 21-year-old’s future has been up in the air for months with PSG, Manchester City and Barcelona all fighting for his signature.

On Wednesday, De Jong’s fate was finally decided with Barcelona announcing his capture on a five-year deal.

De Jong said, “I am happy and proud to be an FC Barcelona player. I am also relieved to get everything done.

“FC Barcelona has always been my dream. They were really serious during negotiations and I have a chance of playing regularly and that made my choice easier in that respect.

“When I started to watch football regularly as a child I became a fan of FC Barcelona and I enjoyed watching Lionel Messi.”

On his record €86 million fee, De Jong added, “It’s nice to become the most expensive Dutch player of all time particularly for Ajax and my agent for me the price does not matter. I have to ensure that I play good football and play many matches.”

De Jong also revealed that he spoke with PSG and Manchester City before choosing Barcelona, “I spoke to Paris St Germain and also with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. When a club wants you they always try to convince you and the clubs are honest in that way. I am proud of the lengths that they went to. Nothing against those clubs but FC Barcelona as the one I wanted.

“FC Barcelona wanted to sign me last summer and if a club speaks to Ajax or my agent they always tell me and if I find it interesting I will speak to them.”

Now De Jong must focus on Ajax for the rest of the season, starting with a KNVB Cup quarter final on Thursday, “I am looking forward to Ajax v SC Heerenveen in KNVB Cup tomorrow. I am proud to sign for FC Barcelona but my focus is now on Ajax in winning matches and making the fans happy.”
