With Ajax defeating Feyenoord earlier on Sunday, PSV couldn’t afford a slip up if they were to remain favourites for the title. Without Marco van Ginkel, Mauro Junior started in midfield while Luuk de Jong was flanked by Hirving Lozano and Steven Bergwijn.
Phillip Cocu’s side struggled to get going but took the lead just before the break when Bergwijn tapped the ball into the net from De Jong’s knockdown.
PSV couldn’t kill the game off in the second half despite dominating with Lozano particularly wasteful in front of goal. Just after the hour mark, Santiago Arias brought Brahim Darri down in the box and Jeff Hardeveld netted from the spot to level it for the hosts.
Heracles grew in confidence thanks to the equaliser and through Kristoffer Peterson they nearly took the lead but Jeroen Zoet came to PSV’s rescue.
The game was heading for a draw but in the 93rd minute, De Jong fired in Albert Gudmundsson’s cross to save PSV’s blushes and earn them a crucial three points.
PSV keep the gap to Ajax at five points while Heracles are 12th.
