For the first time since completing his move to Barcelona from Ajax, De Jong stepped foot on the Camp Nou pitch for a match. He start in the Trofeu Joan Gamper match against Premier League side Arsenal.
The Dutchman made a fine impression on his home debut despite Arsenal going into half-time with the lead thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
De Jong was withdrawn at half time before Barcelona turned the game around through a Ainsley Maitland-Niles own goal before Luis Suarez scored the winner.
Barcelona lifted the trophy but De Jong also got an individual prize after being named the match’s MVP.
Rightly deserved too. Frenkie said months ago he didn’t expect to be a regular starter at Barca is first season I always disagreed he is too good he was being modest. He walks into that mid & makes huge diff for defence & attack.
