Frenkie de Jong was crucial as Barcelona came from behind to defeat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 in the Copa del Rey.

Barcelona had a troubling evening in the cup and went into the break level with De Jong hitting the woodwork.

In the 63rd minute, Fran García gave Rayo the lead and it appeared that Barcelona could be on the end of an upset. However, De Jong then stepped up with an excellent pass in the 68th minute to set Antoine Griezmann in on goal and he set up Lionel Messi to net the equaliser.

Then in the 80th minute, De Jong scored from a Jordi Alba cross to book Barcelona’s place in the next round.

De Jong now has four goals and two assists in seven games this calendar year. Ronald Koeman’s decision to push the Dutchman further up the pitch is paying off.

Elsewhere in the cup, Luuk de Jong netted twice as Sevilla defeated Valencia 3-0.
