Frenkie de Jong has given his reaction after sealing his move from Ajax to Barcelona, which will go through in the summer.

The 21-year-old’s future has been up in the air for months but on Wednesday Barcelona confirmed his arrival in the summer for a fee which will rise to €86 million.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad, De Jong has explained his reasons for the move and his feelings about playing with his idol Lionel Messi.

On Messi he said, “For me that will be very special. Everyone knows that I think he’s the best. But it has not been a decisive factor. That does not work. I also do not have to look at him as a kind of tourist. I’ll just be his teammate later. “

De Jong knows he isn’t guaranteed a starting spot, “I have outlined the perspective that I have a good chance at a starting place. Naturally, they can not guarantee that. I will have to fight hard for it. Look, Sergio Busquets is in the number-6 position. It would be rather weird if I started saying: I’m going to play over the best defensive midfielder from the start. I do not have any illusions. At FC Barcelona they see me more for the two other positions in the midfield. ”

On the €86 million fee, he said, “Of course it is a lot of money. A nice amount, also for Ajax. But it does not do much for me personally. Twenty or one hundred and fifty million, I do not care. ”

De Jong is not worried about failing in Spain, “Of course that is possible. But you have to have a little confidence in yourself. I must not blame myself for anything. So learn and adjust to the language immediately. I am 21 years old. If all goes well, I’ll only get better. “
