Frenkie de Jong has revealed that he spoke with Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman several times before agreeing a move to Barcelona.

Ahead of Netherlands clash with Belarus on Thursday, De Jong took his place alongside Ronald Koeman at a press conference.

Asked if they spoke about his decision to join Barcelona, De Jong said, “I certainly asked the coach about things. What it was like there, both life and his time at the club.

“It is always nice to know that sort of thing. We talked about it regularly. Yes, also before the transfer. In that period there was also talk of rumours and interest. I was curious about what the trainer had to say.

“I think that it is most important for the trainer, that I play many minutes at a high level.”

Koeman was happy with De Jong’s words and praised the midfielder, “I don’t think I spoke wisely when I was 21 years old. I had to learn it later. I see a smile in everything he does. That’s great, that’s how you would like to see everyone.”
