Frenkie de Jong scored his first goal for Barcelona as they defeated Valencia 5-2 on Saturday evening.

Despite some criticism over his performances for the club so far, De Jong was once again selected in the Barcelona starting eleven, while at the other end, Jasper Cillessen was in goal for Valencia.

After two minutes, De Jong set up 16-year-old forward Ansu Fati to fire Barcelona ahead. Five minutes later, Fati returned the favour with a cross for De Jong to slide in his first goal for Barcelona.

Kevin Gameiro pulled one back for Valencia before the half-hour mark but six minutes into the second half, Gerard Pique restored Barcelona’s two-goal lead. A Luis Suarez double made it 5-1 before Maximiliano Gomez Gonzalez pulled back a consolation in injury time.

De Jong played 70 minutes of the game and was given a big ovation from the home crowd.
