Frenkie de Jong started for Barcelona but he could not prevent his side going down 3-1 against bitter rivals Real Madrid.

Reports in Spain last week claimed that De Jong was upset at not starting the last two Barcelona games and it claimed that the Dutchman would be furious if he was left out from the start against Real Madrid.

Xavi Hernandez did start with De Jong on Sunday but the midfielder could not prevent Real Madrid from taking a 2-0 lead into the break. Karim Benzema and Federico Valverde netted.

Ferran Torres pulled one back with seven minutes to go, but Rodygo’s penalty sealed the win for the hosts.

De Jong played the full game and he was one of the better performers for Barcelona, but Real Madrid take the bragging rights. Memphis Depay is still out injured.
