Henk de Jong has stepped down as Cambuur head coach due to health concerns.

At the end of last year a cyst was found in De Jong’s head but he made his return in the summer. However, Cambuur have now confirmed that De Jong has stepped down.

De Jong will focus completely on his recovery but it is likely that he will stay on at Cambuur in a different role.

On the club’s website, De Jong said, “This news may come as a surprise to many people, but it is a decision that you naturally think long and hard about. In the end, health is the most important thing and what I think is perhaps even more important is my commitment to the club, staff, players and supporters.

“We did everything we could and tried, but you also have to be honest and this is the best thing for everyone given the situation. As the head coach of an Eredivisie club, you don’t get time to fully recover and I’m going to really take the time for that. Then we’ll see what the future brings, where another role within SC Cambuur is certainly possible. “

Pascal Bosrischt and Martijn Barto will take over for the time being as Cambuur search for a replacement.
