Matthijs de Ligt has confirmed that the Netherlands players will make a statement about the World Cup in Qatar on Saturday.

Norway and Germany players made a statement towards the human rights issues in Qatar with special shirts before their World Cup qualifiers earlier in the week.

Speaking at the press conference before Netherlands clash with Latvia, De Ligt confirmed that the Oranje players will also make some sort of statement before the game on Saturday.

He said, “I can give a scoop. You will see what it is tomorrow. It is certainly an issue in the group of players. We have talked about it for a long time, it is a sensitive subject.

“I think it is clear what our opinion is. It is a difficult situation in Qatar that we have talked about a lot.”

De Ligt revealed the statement was brought forward in the player’s group chat, “In the end, we all made the decision. The players council has submitted it to the group, it has been a joint decision. Everyone has to support it.”
